Report on Farmer-Herder Crisis in Middle Belt Nigeria

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.1 The clashes between farmers and herders in Nigeria particularly in the middle belt have led to grave human rights and humanitarian crisis. The clashes have resulted in fatalities, injuries, displacements, destruction of livelihoods as well as properties and this has heightened religious and ethnic hostilities within the region.

1.2 With a record of over 1800 fatalities within the first half of 2018 alone, the fatality rate relating to farmer-herder clashes is higher than that attributed to the Boko Haram insurgency.

A. AGATU LGA

1. The OHCHR Monitoring Team on the 4/09/2020 visited the community of Olegechonu-Agatu, the monitor was able to visit 4 households in this river bank community, identified certain issues with the households like poor access to health care, poor nutrition, poor health seeking behavior. The community is gradually coming back to its full population and capacity.

2. The OHCHR Monitoring Team on the 11/09/2020 visited the community of Ocholonya, the monitor was able to visit 9 households in this river bank community, and she identified certain issues with the households like poor access to health care, poor health seeking behavior. The monitor also observed that the community is very peaceful and also that people have started rebuilding their houses.
