The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday recorded another milestone in the resolution of a lingering denial of right to inheritance against a woman in Ugwulangwu community in Ohaozara local government of Ebonyi state.

The Ebonyi state office in collaboration with other partners comprising MDAs, CSOs, NGOs etc visited the community to enforce the decision of the Executive Secretary's led Special Investigation Panel on Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV).

The Panel had on the 16th and 17th February, 2021 heard and concluded over nine (9) cases on SGBV, while directing the the state office to liaise with other partners in the state to implement and enforce the decisions of the panel within 30 days from the date of such rulings.

In complying with the directives of the panel, the Complainant was assisted to regain her motorcycle and other items that were confiscated by her community, contrary to the relevant provisions of the Nigerian Constitution as well as other legislations such as Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP).

Her house which was hitherto sealed was opened following the enforcement of the decision of the NHRC Panel on SGBV.

Upon unsealing the house, the woman was supported to get a religious Minister of her choice to bless the house so that she could gain entrance with rest of mind.

The properties of her father, which is the bone of contention will now be shared between her and her half-brother in the Commission's next visit to the community.
