The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commended the Nigerian Military and Borno state government for the professional and human right friendly manner they managed the entire process leading to the safe return of one of the over 200 schoolgirls abducted seven years ago at a Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno state.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission,Mr. Tony Ojukwu Esq. who gave this commendation over the weekend while reacting to the return of Ruth Ngladar Pogu, one of the missing schoolgirls in the aftermath of Boko Haram kidnapping of the said number of students in 2014, said that both the Military and the Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum deserve commendation for the "uncommon display of intelligence and exemplary leadership despite the security challenge in the the country and the North East in particular".

According to the Executive Secretary, we are happy to receive the news that Ruth, alongside the man she was said to have married during her captivity, surrendered themselves to the Nigerian military on July 28, 2021, at a location in Bama.

"We therefore thank those behind this achievement, whom we learnt kept the development secret and used the last 10 days to contact the parents of the returning girl and the association of parents of the missing schoolgirls in order to ascertain her identity, before making the matter public.

"The Commission is also glad to hear Prof. Zulum’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau, confirming that the governor received the Chibok girl at the Government House in the presence of overwhelmed parents who reunited with her", Mr. Ojukwu said.

The Executive Secretary used this medium to call on the federal government, the Military and other stakeholders to intensify efforts towards ensuring the release of the remaining Chibok Schoolgirls and indeed other persons who have been declared missing in similar circumstances in the country.
