The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reaffirmed its commitment to partner with civil society organizations (CSOs) to enhance the promotion, protection, and enforcement of human rights in Nigeria.

This commitment was reiterated during a meeting between officials of the NHRC and representatives from Devatop Centre for Africa Development, a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to advancing human rights and development in Africa.

The meeting, which took place at THE Commission's headquarters, underscored the importance of collaboration between the Commission and CSOs in addressing human rights challenges in Nigeria.

The Deputy Director of Women and Children Department at NHRC, Mrs. Bridget Robert, emphasized that the Commission recognizes the value of partnerships in leveraging resources, expertise, and networks to promote human rights.

Mrs. Robert noted that while the NHRC has established reporting channels, including the 6472 toll-free number, the Commission appreciates innovative initiatives such as the 'Talkam' App developed by Devatop Centre for Africa Development. This App provides an additional platform for reporting human rights violations, and the NHRC is keen to explore ways to utilize this technology to enhance its mandate.

The Deputy Director of Legal Services and Enforcement Department, Mrs. Pwadumdi Oko, suggested that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) could be developed to formalize the partnership between the NHRC and Devatop Centre for Africa Development. This would specify areas of collaboration, including human rights promotion, protection, and capacity-building initiatives.

On his part, Mr. Joseph Osigwe, Executive Director of Devatop Centre for Africa Development, highlighted the organization's commitment to advancing human rights in Nigeria. He noted that the 'Talkam' App has been recognized by the United Nations, which awarded his organization a grant to expand its usage. Mr. Osigwe expressed his organization's willingness to collaborate with the NHRC on human rights initiatives, including capacity-building training programs.

The NHRC's commitment to partnering with CSOs like Devatop Centre for Africa Development reflects its recognition of the critical role that these organizations play in promoting and protecting human rights in Nigeria.

With effective collaboration the NHRC and CSOs can leverage their collective strengths to address human rights challenges and promote a culture of respect for human dignity and well-being.
