The National Human Rights Commission NHRC in collaboration with MacArthur Foundation have celebrated deserving staff and stakeholders at a special awards Night/Dinner to honour their hard work, dedication and loyalty in the promotion and protection of human Rights.

The awards which were in 4 categories include awards to Kenechukwu Nnamdi Onugu, a Program Analyst on grade level 08 who won the Senior Staff Category and Ndam Fadum, a grade level 06 Staff from Plateau State Office won that of the Junior Staff Category. The other categories include 2022 long service staff awards to pioneer staff as well as journalist whose awards goes to Edith Nwapi of News Agency of (NAN) and Sunday Ejike Benjamin of Tribune.

Rabi Anwar, Director, of Legal Service and Enforcement stated that the award was a fallout of the Commission’s annual award programme, instituted in 2021 for best performing staff. She said the annual award is to “motivate and a reward staff for diligence and hard work”.

She said Awardees were nominated from various head of departments and units across the 36 States offices of the Commission, including the Abuja Metropolitan Office in two categories, namely: the Junior Staff Award-for Grade levels 07 and below, and Senior Staff Award – for Grade levels 08 to 14.

Ifeoma Nwakanma mni, Director Human Rights Institute, stated that the Commission has identified police personnel who have stood out among their colleagues in the area of human rights protection.

Nwakanma said the first set of officers honoured were identified as most receptive to the human rights training, and considered as advocates for human rights within the police, while the second category was found to be very receptive to the Commission’s Visitors during the Police Stations Visitor’s week (PSVW).

As for Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai, Mohammed, the media award which were in three categories were for the Long Service Award; this was given to the journalist who has shown commitment to promoting the work of the the Commission over the years while rising through the ranks.

Others are Explanatory Reporter of the Year; this she said goes for the Reporter who pays attention to details and reports human rights matters from all angles. She added that the Human Rights Promotion Reporter of the Year goes to the reporter who is passionate about reporting human rights issues irrespective of whether the reporter is invited to cover the event or not.
