The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed concern about the rising cases of drug abuse/addiction in Nigeria saying inadequate policy framework and dearth of public healthcare facilities for victims have combined to worsen the situation.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will commence a nationwide audit of detention centres beginning this month of June.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu Esq disclosed this in Yola, Adamawa state at a midterm review meeting of the NHRC/UNHCR/IDP Protection Monitoring Project.
The NHRC boss said the exercise is in fulfillment of the Commission’s mandate to ensure that detention facilities across the country are run in line with the applicable Nigerian Constitutional requirement and in accordance with the UN Minimum Standards for detention centers.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is to collaborate with International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) to establish shelter homes for victims of domestic violence especially women and children.
Receiving Officials of FIDA Abuja branch on an official visit to the Commission, Executive Secretary NHRC, Tony Ojukwu Esq stated that both organizations have complementary functions and will work to achieve set mandate.
According to the Executive Secretary, the Commission has been desirous of acquiring a shelter home in view of the numerous cases of victims of domestic violence that inundate the Commission.
